Minerals... from Mother Earth
Judy Power
ONYX

This is a type of chalcedony a mineral substance composed primarily
of quartz but having other varied minerals mixed into the quartz. Onyx is
found in almost any color dependent upon what other substances are mixed
with the quartz. It is generally found in masses never crystals. This
stone is used for centering and aligning the whole being with the higher
powers. It is also used to help one get through periods of grief, enhance
self-control, decision making, and encourages happiness, stability and good
fortune. It may be used to help one assimilate energies from the Universe
which one needs. The black is traditionally used for protection against
negativity. I must warn you that great care should be taken when used for
this purpose because it also collects negativity which you yourself may
emit. Like the good soldier that it is, it will hold and collect all negativity
until it can hold no more, and then that negativity spills over like a cup
filled with too much water. Great care must be taken to cleanse it often.
(Soak in natural salt water or bury in the earth for a while. The goblets
of onyx seen in the picture are used to put purified water into, preferably
in the refrigerator over night to be drunk in the morning as a tonic to
help you throughout the day.
OPAL

Opals are among the most exciting and beautiful gemstones. They are found
in many types with wonderfully varied colors and textures. The most common
(jelly opal) are a very soft and delicate material, easily ruined with careless
handling. The jelly opal is upon first glance usually a translucent white
or clear, but upon closer observation displays wonderful bursts of sparkling,
fire-like colors which dance as they are moved around under different lights.
The beautiful effervescent colors are a result of water vapor trapped inside,
along with a variety of minerals present. These opals should never be allowed
to dry out for extended periods of time. Keep in mind that they are also
a very soft material. When they are being polished they require extreme
care and are not for the novice doing lapidary work. There are many different
types of opal including jelly or wood opal, Andean opal, rare black opal,
boulder opal, dandritic opal, fire opal (Mexico), Honduran opal and naturalized
wood opal. The colors of opal are limitless. It is considered to be the
stone for those born under the sign of Libra. Opal tends to open new doors
for its wearer, thus is a great stone for someone who tends to get stuck
as a reclusive hiding in his personal little corner. It helps one to see
things that he may have had difficulty visualizing on his own. At the same
time it gives a sense of excitement to investigate unexplored areas mentally,
physically and emotionally. It goes best with the sign of Libra because
it also enhances one's emotional state of being Librians are known
for being stable and steady (having sort of a "don't-rock-the-boat"
attitude about life). It is definitely a stone of renewal, investigating
mystery. Black opal can provide grounding, blue opal freedom of speech and
courage to express. The Andean opal is predominantly used for spiritual
traveling. It treats bone marrow problems and soft tissue in the feet, and
can also provide some comfort during childbirth. It can strengthen the memory
and helps instill faithfulness. Prices vary from a few dollars to as high
as you are willing to pay. Some of the best opal may be found in Australia.
