Seven Basic Freedoms
by Rev. Linda Lou Kearns

January. Did you know the year's first month is named after the Roman
god, Janus? Janus is a deity associated with doors, gates, and all new beginnings.
Every January, every day, every hour, every minute, we have the freedom
to be ALL of who we are. We don't need to break out of anything, rather
gently melt into who we really are. Henry David Thoreau wrote, "We
are constantly invited to be what we are."
"We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created
equal." We all have equal access to the God within. We are all Spiritual
Beings having this human experience. The purpose of life is to give birth
to the best within us. To do this, let's exercise seven basic freedoms that
we all have.
1. We are all free to connect with the Truth that is within each and
every one of us. We do not need to look outside of ourselves for the
Truth just be still and listen to the Truth within. When we need to
know a Truth, we tend to look outside ourselves for answers and solutions.
The last place we look is in our own heart. Meanwhile, every answer and
solution we could ever need to know abides at the core of our being.
2. We are free to create our experience. All creation begins with
a thought. We think about 45,000 thoughts a day. Let's discipline ourselves
to think thoughts that are empowering. Let's think about what we want to
create instead of what we don't want. The funny thing about life is those
who are willing to settle for less usually get it. No one forces us what
to think. Let's harness the power of thought and live the life we have imagined.
When we change our thinking we change our life.
3. We all have the freedom and power to change. We can perceive
change as a threat, or an opportunity. The definition of insanity is doing
the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We can live
life differently. We can stop expecting people to be mind readers and communicate
what we are thinking and feeling. We can quit being a doormat and set boundaries.
We can sell our condo in Victim Land and move into a mansion in Self-empowered
Land. If no one promises us a rose garden, let's plant our own. We can accept
and love ourselves unconditionally and then do the same for others. Every
moment we love is a great moment. Every moment we love we make a difference.
4. We all have the freedom to release what is no longer working for
us in our lives; people, places and things. If the horse is dead, let's
get off, bury it, and move on. Let's release resentment for our own well-being,
so we can move on. The word resentment comes from the Latin words re (to
go back again and again) and sentire (to feel). When we stay in resentment
we rehash the feelings and energy of the original event over and over again.
Releasing resentment certainly does not mean that what anyone said or did
to us was all right. It means we are no longer torturing ourselves by playing
the thoughts and feeling the feelings of the event in our body. Releasing
resentment is a gift we give ourselves.
5. We all have the freedom to experience peace in the present moment.
Peace is first and foremost a state of mind. When we know this we can
have real peace and love in our hearts even when turmoil and turbulence
surround us. Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise,
trouble or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things
and still be calm in our heart. That peace comes from being one with the
Spirit within. God is in the present moment. To experience this peace means
we stay in the present moment, releasing the past and surrendering the future
to God.
6. We have the freedom to be grateful. Whatever we focus on expands.
When we focus on what we are already grateful for, we attract and receive
more to be grateful for. Like always attracts like. There are 86,400 seconds
in one day. We can be grateful we all have the same amount of time every
day. Let's spend our time in gratitude.
7. We all have the freedom to dream and then let our dreams take flight.
Life was meant to be an adventure. Within each of us are the keys to
open the doors to any dream. For every dream we have, we were given everything
we need to make the dream come true. When we follow our dreams it gives
our spirit wings. Thoreau wrote, "Have the courage to live the life
you've dreamed with enthusiasm. Years can wrinkle your skin. Only lack of
enthusiasm can wrinkle your soul." Follow your dreams and believe in
the voice of your heart. If dreams were for sale, what would you buy?
This year, let's remember we have the freedom to love, to learn, to dream
and to become more than we ever imagined!
