Freedom From Fear
by Kelly Menges

We as human beings are being called on everyday to express our love rather
than our fear. Fear means war and separation; love means peace and connection.
Over the years, war has never ultimately worked in solving the problems
of our world. We need to look beyond the material world as we know it to
that part of us which connects us to all human beings, to life itself, which
can never be broken. It is this bond that needs to be exposed, embraced
and reconciled in order to live more peaceful lives on earth.
Blaming others for the downfall of a nation only acts as a decoy preventing
us from seeing what is really happening. The manifestation of the world
around us is a direct reflection of what we as human individuals, or a family,
or a community, or a nation believe. Our reality is based on our own belief
system. So then I ask: What has us believing life in such a way that we
as a world nation allow poverty and war, hate and fear to reside? Is it
our omnipotence, our greed, our superiority, or our inferiority?
What is it that you and I believe about our world and ourselves? I urge
you to take some time and search inwardly for the way in which your belief
systems contributed/contribute psychologically or otherwise to what is happening
around us.
This has not been going on only the last 100 years or so. This has been
the way of thinking for generations. It is so well developed in us that
we believe it to be the truth of who we are and how we operate; that to
live any other way would be foreign and maybe even frightening. It is safer
to play life the way we always have, out of fear, than risk being different
by revealing the truth of who we are.
Ultimately, though, we create wars and destruction things that
separate us because we believe we are separate from each other; and
so we do things that validate this belief and assist us to re-create it
time and time again. It has become a habit. We talk about freedom, but how
can we truly be free when we are bound by our limiting beliefs?
This is the time to allow ourselves to be who we truly are remembering
that we are all connected and that we are here to serve each other out of
love and peace. This is the time to practice forgiveness and realize that
there is something greater than our material selves that needs to be celebrated.
Then, and only then, can we live peacefully and in harmony with one another,
not disconnected by our beliefs, but re-united in remembering just who we
are.
And so you say: How do we do this? I have been asking myself the same
question. How do I change my belief system in order to create the life I
want, and ultimately achieve freedom from fear? The first thing I did was
look at my life. Look at the people who were in it and the events that seemed
to keep repeating themselves. Life was telling me something and I was not
listening.
My mind holds on so strongly to some of my beliefs that I struggle to
let go of them and be free.
One of them was that I couldn't make a difference in this world. I would
have to be in so many different places at so many different times in order
to do all the things I wanted to do. I wanted to visit many different countries
to impart some things that I have learnt about life to people around the
world so that they could enhance the quality of their own lives. I wanted
it to have a huge impact and I wanted to do it all now. My mind said, "Boy,
you are mad, and just who do you think you are?" It faithfully managed
to keep me from pursuing some of the things I wanted to do.
I looked at why on the one hand I had all these things that I wanted
to do, and on the other I was not doing them. What was getting in the way?
After some time and with the help of a wonderful teacher, I was able to
isolate those beliefs that were holding me back and tell the truth about
them. What I found was that there were some things that were true about
me wanting to empower others. and there were some that were not. For example,
I realized that the greatest impact that I can have on the world is to first
start with me. By looking at my belief system and breaking it down into
what was true about me and what was not, I was able to free myself, and
so my life became more peaceful. This affected my relationships, my career
and so much more. My life became more fulfilling for me and so did my world.
Since we are all connected human beings, what I was doing just to me
was having an impact on everyone around me, whether they knew it or not.
And I was able to make an impact just the thing that I told myself
I would not be able to do!
Begin with yourself and the rest will follow.
