I feel as if we’ve just given birth. My wife Cindi and I would
like to welcome you to our first issue of New Times Naturally! I guess
it’s more of an adoption considering it’s an “eighteen
year old” magazine, but the labor was still there. Of course
we love our new baby!
We spent months scouring around looking for the right business for
the two of us to work on together. We looked at health food stores,
franchises, fitness gyms, etc., etc., etc. until, one day while looking
on the Wall Street Journals www.bizbuysell.com up pops New Times Naturally!
Having worked for numerous publications and being familiar with New
Times I felt this was truly a great opportunity. Cindi also has a
strong interest in nutrition and has worked in customer service and
sales previously. Perfect fit. Now, could we make it happen? Actually
that first trimester was fairly easy. David and Dee are such wonderful
people. We looked at the history, the editorial aspect, the relationships,
the financials and the future potential. Everything appeared promising;
of course relationships of trust and respect are earned. We plan to
work hard at that.
So..... the second trimester was a little tougher. David, in his only
slightly weakened condition drove hard, accepting our initial offer
while expounding over and over about the values and virtues of the
magazine to readers and advertisers alike. Dee kept pouring the tea
so we wouldn’t leave.
All things looked like a go. Coming into the third trimester we invited
a few dignitaries in (accountants & lawyers) and ended up closing
with a month and a half to go before press time. We were getting really
big at this point and the labor began. Countless hours with David
and Dee combined with setting up our home office, buying equipment,
software, phone, email, website URLs, etc. have all taken much energy
and time. By the time we were ready to get down to the business of
putting the magazine together we had approximately 3 weeks. Anyone
who has ever worked in publishing before knows what it’s like
when deadlines near; very stressful. You want everything to be perfect.
You want to make everybody happy. But you have to be realistic. If
you counted every letter in every word in this publication, added
all the photos and layout aspects you might come up with 50,000 things
that could go wrong.
Soon our baby will be delivered, (Naturally!) to the printer, (hospital),
and will be in your hands. I hope you think it’s pretty! I loved
it even before it was born. What I consider to be the best part of
publishing is the bringing together of people. Especially in New Times
Naturally! The holistic community in the Tampa Bay area is tight knit,
loves to share and is growing fast. There is a reason it is growing
fast. It is needed. Finding the root, the basis to our souls, our
bodies and our minds in order to live healthy and happy lives is what
it’s all about. Treatment is not about taking the pain away
with a drug and leaving the dysfunctional something unattended to,
it’s about finding cause and cure.
We hope to continue the tradition of information sharing and love
that David and Dee have so graciously given so much of their lives
to and we wish them all the best in the future. Now, on with changing
the diapers.
