A Lost World?
by AnneMarie Dyer

What if war turns out not to be the real bad thing? What if the real
bad thing is the spiritual condition of humanity? What if war is only a
reflection of that spiritual condition and the spiritual condition itself
is the great tragedy? War is a wake-up call to humanity. Perhaps consequences
reflect back to us all that we have done previously. War may be the consequence
of how we have been living our lives and involves searching for the cause
of our mistakes, our downfall.
Pollution is primarily caused by human behavior and we all need to learn
the educational program "Pollution-Free Behavior 101." Life is
a series of circles, from seed to blossom to ripe fruit and finally to decay.
We watch nature's annual cycle that encompasses all living things. Most
people are out of touch with the subtle rhythms of the earth and the daily
blessings of our natural world. We've miscommunicated with our environment
for a long time, not knowing its language, and have complicated things with
our great intelligence. We must renew our path, our connection to nature
and to one another. Mother Nature appears to be in great pain. However,
with our help, the Phoenix may rise again. It would be the sign of the world's
regeneration, its new age of awareness and eternal peace.
Who has the courage to listen? Native America religion was based on a
relationship with the earth and all living things. Their teachings constituted
an approach to life -- a way of relating to the earth and one another --
that is very different from modern society's approach. Their method of teaching
was through repetition of stories and rituals from generation to generation,
so that Native American children grew up with a sense of belonging. From
the day they were born they were introduced to the elements; this began
their relationship with their environment. As children growing up, they
naturally related to the environment and were not looking down upon nature.
They were on the same level as nature, respecting each blade of grass, each
leaf. We ignored the wisdom of elders and so they went away. The death of
their ideas may be evil's grandest gesture.
A future must be created in which non-polluting, inexpensive energy is
abundantly available. We must develop renewable energy sources, conserve
that energy and protect our environment. We must become self-sufficient.
The majority of energy used is from coal, oil and natural gas. These fuels
are in limited supply and their use results in air pollution, acid rain,
pollution from mercury and other contaminants.
Environmental toxins are responsible for many deaths annually. The indirect
costs of pollution, such as those associated with health care and acid rain,
affect our overall quality of life.
In addition to environmental hazards, the majority of our waters are
so polluted from toxic agricultural and industrial pollutants that they
are unsafe for swimming. Hundreds of thousands of sea mammals are being
killed by drift-net fishing.
The war is not the problem, but rather the result of our dependence on
foreign oil, thus creating instability for the US and other countries. Desert
Storm's purpose was to defend our oil interests in the Persian Gulf region
and that oil is responsible for almost 50% of our trade deficit. To become
independent and efficient with the utilization of our energy, we must eliminate
the hazards and find renewable resources.
Americans need a long-term plan for conservation. We lack hydro- electric,
wind, compact fluorescent lighting, solar power and fuel cell sources. We
must create energy self-sufficiency and add to the economic prosperity of
the nation. Financial incentives for homeowners and industry to use energy-efficient
measures, along with performance standards for energy, could provide the
path. We must stop subsidizing fossil fuels and federal funding of nuclear
energy plant reactor construction. No one can ensure nuclear containment
and non-proliferation. Have we become too political?
Industrial sources of pollution must be eliminated at their source. A
suitable plan must be implemented to control timber cutting and end needless
destruction of forests and the death of many species. Trees are necessary
for maintaining the balance of our atmosphere.
Cleaning up the environment would actually pay a dividend of increased
energy efficiency and economic vitality by reducing health risks and medical
costs. Current agricultural practices produce food that is hazardous to
health; they damage soil and pollute water. Genetically engineered foods
should be a top priority, given proper testing. Chemical-free food is possible
and would likely result in more widespread use of vegetables, fruits and
plant-based proteins. We all need to be educated on these issues. Common
pesticides pose a real and present danger to water quality, wildlife and
human health.
My favorite phrases are "getting back to basics" and "keep
it simple." The earth is our cure, as it is a source of infinite means
for restoring and maintaining good health. Our world receives vital energies
from sun, air and water; our earth is a most powerful healing agent. Natural
health-care programs can prevent disease, promote health and cut health-care
costs. Organic agriculture boosts yields and profitability without hazardous
chemicals and pesticides. Certified organic foods have no synthetic pesticides,
herbicides, preservatives or additives. Better ecology through enriched
drought-resistant soil produces less soil erosion and ground water pollution.
The survival of our society depends on people who have a good connection
with the spiritual. It is necessary to use our thoughts wisely and understand
their power. The Law of Attraction -- "like attracts like" --
starts from within. By returning to those days and practices of our forefathers,
we can return our earth to its natural efficient self! Our precious earth
has a way of healing itself if we would but allow it.
