Improving Your Game

by Rev. Pat Cross

Though we are already well into the New Year it is appropriate and beneficial to reflect upon the New Year's resolutions each of us have made or, for that matter, have not made.

Our lives seem to be a composite of good habits and bad habits which control the choices we make, and the results of those choices.

Every action we take has a corresponding reaction in our life. And every reaction brings about an opportunity for us to choose how to respond to a given situation. The resultant effect on us has its origin and roots in our innermost thoughts, feelings, attitudes, habits, and beliefs.

A new beginning always awaits our discovery and choice. Each new day offers us a smile of acceptance and enthusiasm for life and its many opportunities and adventures.

As we inventorize our innermost thoughts, feelings, attitudes, habits and beliefs, we become aware of the habits that are worth keeping and those which are best to let go of.

When I can release all resentment, anger, frustration, guilt and other negative emotional responses about myself and others, I am truly on a spiritual path of growth and enlightenment. The benefit is that it takes me to a higher plane of consciousness. I experience a life of peace love, gentleness, harmony and divine right action as I know I have allowed the spirit of life to flow in, as, and through me freely.

Beyond the horizon of the known lie many dormant aspects of this precious gift of life. As Ernest Holmes says in the Science of Mind textbook: "This has ever been the lesson taught by the illumined that we find God only within ourselves."

As we continue in this New Year let each of us hold in our hearts and minds the legend and legacy of the spirit of those pioneers whose inspiration, faith and actions have contributed so much to the awakening, enlightenment, evolution and advancement of man's quality of life through the practice of spiritual laws.

Each one of us makes a difference, and the spirit we reflect in our many experiences of life and living build the character, beauty and supremacy befitting our divine heritage and human aspirations.

A very wise philosopher proclaimed, "It is not the strongest species that will survive, not the most intelligent but the one most responsive to change."

As astute students of truth we have learned that our life is a piece of art, our own creation, constantly in the making. We are designing it moment by moment with our every intention, motive, choice and action. This is a powefelt lesson to learn, and to understand and accept how these principles create every one of our experiences.

Life is like a game of tennis. You can always improve your game. Willingness is the key to a more abundant, joyfelt and fulfilling life. Good habits are as hard to break as bad habits so why not accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative? When we gladly follow the impeccable guidance of spirit we not only come to understand ourselves better but all others as well.

The connecting and bonding link of and through all of us is the divine nature of spirit. A homecoming to the origin and center of peace, harmony and togetherness... a oneness of Spirit expressing through the diversity of humanity.

By the grace of God most of us have realized we are each a loving expression of the essence of the one pure spirit of God. We have only the door of choice to open to enter God's inner sanctuary, to partake of the unlimited blessings and gifts.

So let us unblock the dam of human inhibitions, unkind habits and practices and allow this beautiful divine life within us to flow lovingly, gently, and harmoniously as the gift we are to others, and be receptive to the gifts that others are to us.

As we make choices that honor who we are and begin living in the fullness of ourselves, we'll have a chance to reach our greatest potential... a worthy, creative and loving expression of God's almighty presence and power in, as, and through us all.

Namasté.
