A Spiritual AdventureRev. Pat Cross
"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple" (an anthology of short stories and poetry) is a classic book that is a familiar to most of us. The title of this book portrays the life-style of many women of today's generation and generations of yesteryears. There is indeed a vital and universal message for all of us contained in its title. To begin anew again at any chronological age is the theme and message I wish to share with you. Spirit is ageless, so age is no hindrance or barrier to growing spiritually and/or growing up to our Higher Self. The point of power for change is always in this Now Moment. Now is the appointed time. And love is the way. There is no ideal place to live on this earth. Yes, of course, there are locations that are more preferable to each of us. Life is not about living in one geographical place rather than another but it is about maintaining an idealistic attitude for and about life, wherever we live. That attitude alone is the rudder of the soul and establishes the point of direction and power to effect any change we are desirous of making. It is known as the creative process and is available to each of us an inherent source of energy within us. A source of consciousness found deep within us and which always operates at the level of our present level of understanding, desire and acceptance. It's an awakening to a higher source of being and consciously choosing to allow that higher power (the ultimate source of good for all) to motivate and direct our every move, thought, feeling, attitude and response. An exploration and adventure in consciousness achieved by opening up to the new, discarding what characteristics, old habits and practices that are no longer appropriate or beneficial to our wellness of being. Take, for instance, the example of interaction and communication amongst human beings. Recently I was having a telephone conversation with a male, supposedly mature in his ways, when all of a sudden he hung up the phone and his part of the phone conversations was over. I was hurt by his actions and humanly let it hurt me deeply. I nursed the hurt for much too long and inflicted much suffering upon myself. I am sure I aggravated the situation while on the phone by my constant obsessing over the subject matter and continuing to do so in my mind later. Upon perceiving the experience in the light of truth, as I understand truth, his action was more habit than intentional. To me that was his pattern of handling confrontation and it wasn't about me. And my pattern of handling such an experience was one of reacting to it adversely and taking it personally. In an attempt to rectify the occurrence I wrote a note to this person and apologized for my part of the unhealthy telephone conversation. A case in point of this human interaction is that the experiences we have in life and living are not as important as the way we choose to relate and respond to them. That is what makes the difference and is the vital ingredient, life-enhancing, life-sustaining and life-supporting element that creates wellness of being and the highest good for all. Up the ladder of consciousness is the greatest and most beneficial exploration and adventure we will ever encounter, and its rewards are immeasurable. Each of us is created in the image and likeness of God, and come from the one source of divine creation. We are unique and individual in our expressions. Just because we are different, as God made us in our uniqueness and originality, does not mean we are deficient. As spiritual beings living in a world of humanhood there is a need for all of us to clarify our intentions and focus our attention and energy on the most lovely things which cannot be seen all the time but which are always felt with the heart. William Glassner M.D., the author of "Reality Therapy," recently published a new book titled "New Psychology or Personal Freedom" and deals with choosing the life you want to live and staying close to the people you need. In my awareness immediately comes to mind another title, "Choice Therapy" that would equally serve and enlighten us in the exploration of and adventure in consciousness toward the betterment of human relationships, communications and life expression. Wow! The choices are many in the selection of ways and means to interact and interrelate with others. We can either enter into communication with ourselves and others on a personality basis or we can explore and examine our consciousness more deeply and discover the spiritual roots and divine heritage that are our true essence. This, to me, becomes a spiritual adventure where we reach and touch the heart of the soul. We experience and express the gentleness of life, the sweetness of communication and the grace of God's oneness of creation with all its magnificent diversity. We recognize and realize each of us is an expression of and one with God's radiant wholeness, clarifying beauty and resplendent joy. This, indeed, is the ultimate eternal adventure which is the most awesome gift of life awaiting our discovery through our willingness to explore and approach life in the light of spiritual truths... the divine, eternal, interpretation of life and life's purpose.
