Attachment and Detachment - Their Hidden Meaning

by Magzcha Westerman

One of the more fascinating applications of Numerology is to language. That is, Numerology's ability to reveal the hidden, esoteric, meaning of words.

Take the words "ATTACHMENT" and "DETACHMENT," for example. In order to analyze them (or any other word), a number is assigned to each letter of the alphabet. A = 1; B = 2, and so on. Double digits are reduced to single digits, as follows: The 14th letter of the alphabet is "N." 14 = 1 + 4 = 5, so N has a numerical value of 5.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

A B C D E F G H I

J K L M N 0 P Q R

S T U V W X Y Z

The word ATTACHMENT sums 33, and when reduced (3 + 3 = 6) becomes a 6, written as 33/6.

1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 8 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 2 = 33/6

Interpreting the numbers

#3. Three stands for love and creativity, but its primary meaning is "romantic love," because Venus, the Goddess of Love, is the Ruler of #3.

#33. Here, the doubled three has a special meaning. #33 is a Master Number and a higher octave of #3. Romantic, physical love is raised to the level of universal love, compassion and service. 33 is also known as the "Christ vibration," because the word "Saviour" sums 33. The words PRIEST, SAMARITAN, and TEACHER also sum 33.

If, however, 33 is not expressed as universal love, compassion and service, but rather as two threes, then it is love doubled, an overdose, too much, which creates attachment. One of the American College dictionary's definitions of attachment is "affection that BINDS one to another person or to a thing . . ."

#6. 33 = 3 + 3 = 6. The meaning of 6 is best illustrated by the 6th Tarot card of the Major Arcana, "The Lovers." Numerologically, #6 stands for love and intimacy within the family, and for adjustment, responsibility and service. From the perspective of Tarot, one of the meanings for this card is that the prototypes of man and woman, Adam and Eve, represent the union of opposites - of male and female, good and evil, etc. But since opposites are really different manifestations of the great "ONE," they are actually complementary.

Behind Eve is a tree bearing the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, and the serpent of temptation (also of wisdom) entwines it. The implication is that the pure love and harmony of the lovers is subject to temptation, ever lurking in the background. Temptation, leading to bondage, is graphically illustrated by another #6, the 15th Tarot card of the Major Arcana (15 = 1 + 5 = 6). Here, the lovers of the 6th Tarot card have succumbed to temptation (the devil), and are now ATTACHED to each other by the chains of bondage.

What, therefore, is the true meaning of attachment? Is it romantic love, universal love, or bondage? The word itself contains the potential for each of these, plus more. In our culture, however, being attached to someone or something is a natural and acceptable condition. Symbolic attachments abound - vows, rings, etc. We are attached to lifestyles, mates, kids, friends, homes, cars, pets, philosophies, religions, etc. It is when our attachments become obsessive that we live in bondage. The Buddhist view, in contrast to ours, seeks DETACHMENT, because attachments create unhappiness.

4 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 8 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 2 = 39

39 = 3 + 9 = 12 = 1 + 2 = >êow can DEtachment sum 3, the number of love? It can, because it is not just 3, it is 39 which reduces to 3. Nine refers to mastery, attainment, completion and endings. As the last number in a numerical cycle, it brings closure and ushers in the ONE of new beginnings (10 = I + 0 = 1). So detachment refers to love (3) ended (9), the LETTING GO of ATTACHMENT. Note that the prefix DE also sums 9 (D is 4 and E is 5).

What does your given name REALLY mean? What does your married name say about your relationship? What is the secret behind your address? Using Number to reveal the hidden nature of things is a fascinating discipline, but buyer beware - you may become attached, because the word NUMEROLOGY sums 3! (57 = 5 + 7 = 12 = 1 + 2 = 3) s
