Peace Of Mind

In a time when the world is filled with daily stressors, it is crucial to develop a sense of peace in order to prevent chronic depression and anxiety. One of the ways in which we can develop peace of mind as it relates to our environment is to take the best possible care of ourselves. Disease prevention, relaxation, physical activity and the avoidance of harmful substances are all important when trying to cultivate peace of mind.

While we do not want to become obsessive about germs, it is important for our own peace of mind to make sure, for example, that we wash our hands before eating.

Few people are aware of the many microscopic organisms that can cause disease. We cannot see them, so it is easy to ignore the fact that they exist. Unfortunately, in this day and age, it is vital that we take the utmost care to prevent infection. How can we guard against the war that many micro-organisms are waging on the unsuspecting?

Keeping the immune system in peak condition is one piece of the puzzle. Adequate rest and exercise as well as clean air and water will help. Various supplements may also be of benefit, but need to be taken with caution. Not all immune boosting herbs should be taken on a regular basis. Some herbs should only be taken for a brief duration in order to effectively enhance immunity. Avoiding stress and controlling temper can also help the immune system. Behavioral therapy and the use of relaxation can be beneficial as well.

Another important consideration is the attention that we pay to what we eat. If possible, it is best to avoid red meat since beef may carry unhealthy levels of E-choli bacteria. Chicken can also be a source of food-borne infection. Chicken and beef are frequently injected with antibiotics. What happens as a result, is that many of the organisms that cause disease can adapt to become immune to the effects of such antibiotics. Scientists believe that more and more potentially dangerous micro-organisms are adapting and making their way into the food supply. This is why it is vital to make sure that you protect yourself by following good sanitation practices.

Avoiding stimulants is also important, particularly for the anxiety sufferer. The use of coffee, diet pills, certain cold medications, and colas can lead to jitters and anxious feelings. In addition, it is wise to avoid diet soda and all products that contain aspartame. Aspartame can effect the nervous system in negative ways that can disrupt the normal sense of well being.

Listening to soothing music can also help to create a feeling of peacefulness. The Buddhists believe that focusing on the present moment is also important for attaining a peaceful state. Meditation and breathwork can be extremely beneficial towards cultivating peace of mind. Meditation and breathwork can help us connect with a place of peace by allowing us to release negative energy and calm the mind.

There are also a number of physical disciplines such as tai chi and yoga that have been used to promote a sense of peace and balance. For most people, some form of physical activity is beneficial to the mind. Taking daily walks can be an excellent way to find a place of peace.

Many people find that going to the beach or a park can be beneficial. Writing poems or simply keeping a journal can help too. Of course, with real organic disorders, none of the traditional self-help methods for relaxing will lead to lasting peace of mind.

Biochemical imbalances of the brain are treatable now through a combination of natural remedies and effective medications. It is very important for people who have made attempts to control anxiety and depression by natural means not to overlook the fact that they may need a thorough evaluation from a trained specialist in neurobehavioral medicine.

I have seen many patients try self-help relaxation techniques only to become discouraged. When there is a biochemical basis for panic disorder, it is often necessary to combine traditional medicine with the more holistic approaches in order to get significant results.

Cultivating peace of mind is a process. Watching what you eat, making sure to get adequate rest, using techniques to lower stress levels, and determining whether or not you have a biochemical imbalance can all be links in the chain that leads to well being and good emotional health.
