Body-Mind Awareness

by Richard A. Velez

In life, we all seek for transitions for our good. We seek to change, whether we are aware of it or not. Waking up to this should be a natural process. There are some understandings that we need to be aware of which will assist us along this path.

Right now, think of your body the one that answers to Steve, Anna, Mary, whoever as a gift to you. Realize that you get to let that homosapien do or not do what you know it should be doing at any given moment. Most of what you do you already know whether you should be doing it or not. The understandings begin to unfold when you realize why you do what you do. What was once said by the famous Wayne Dyer says it all: "We are spiritual beings having a human experience and all the time we think we are human beings having a spiritual experience". The Planet of the Apes movie was right when Charleton Heston said at the end, "We've got it all turned around".

Transitions happen all the time and we only realize it if we watch what is brought before us. For example, not enough water, kidney stones. Our bodies are two thirds water, so drink water to cleanse the body. Practice breathing through your nose and know you are that silent essence before the thought, the essence that knows what is for your good. Know what you do at all times, even when you scratch your nose or blink. Be in the here and now. Be aware of the sounds around you. Remember, we aren't but a second in history. Learn to know how you feel at any given moment.

There are many ways we can accelerate our transition into body-mind awareness. Two ways that are becoming mainstream are emotional release and bodywork. By bodywork I mean massage modalities such as rolfing, stretching, craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, etc. Individually, emotional release and bodywork are both very effective techniques, but when done together, the results are phenomenal.

As you might be aware, through life, we experience different situations that cause us pain and we attach certain feelings to them. Fear, guilt, anger, hatred, love, joy, depression etc. If at the time of these different experiences, we are not allowed to express our feelings, or we hold back these emotions, what do you think happens to them? These emotions are stored in the body tissues. Our bodies can't differentiate between physical and emotional pain. The emotional scars are just as real to our body as those caused from physical trauma. The tightness in our muscles, the stiffness in our joints, the pains in our neck and back are all examples of emotions we are holding onto. Various forms of emotional garbage that holds us back on our quest to discover who we really are.

Most of us are familiar with the idea of a good relaxing massage, but by having the body's musculoskeletal system released through specific techniques, the tension and emotional garbage that has been stacking up for so long can begin to filter out of the body. As we accomplish this we can truly begin to heal and grow. All healing takes place from within. Even the best doctor's sure hands and all of our modern technology can help create ideal circumstances for health, but it is the spirit that affects the healing. A body without a spirit cannot be healed, it cannot live for long. Remember, the self knows every thought, the self is every thought. The self knows every move, the self is every move. These are our bodies, it is not who we are. But take care of your gift. It is your responsibility.

Remember, along this path of life, we choose what happens to us. When things don't go the way we think they should and we start blaming others, and making excuses, we are really trying to put the blame "out there". Realizing you are in charge of your life and taking responsibility for the situations we manifest is how we change and grow. We can start by taking responsibility for everything even if it seems little or insignificant. For example, buying toothpaste before you run out, turning off the lights, paying the bills on time, getting to that appointment on time, etc. Everything that needs to be done should not be left for another. We must also take responsibility for our inactivity, as this too, is our choice. In accepting responsibility, one grows in understanding that the choice is all our own. All your own to make or not make. The realization that comes from this will expand your life. Your future is now and can grow into this understanding, into doing what's right for you to do.
